News at Ten

  1. The old Chinese practice of "ghost brides" - involving young men who die unmarried being accompanied to their graves by deceased women to be their wives in the afterlife - is still continued in some parts of Chinese society.
  2. Since 1947, anything from punishing children by making them stand out in the hall to physically striking them is banned in Japan.
  3. The Greek Orthodox Church is trying to outlaw a revival of the Ancient Greek religion.
  4. Abolished in 1974, the former Greek monarchy's items going under the hammer at a London auction sparked Greek protest.
  5. A smoker's lungs are not cleaned out properly as smoking paralyses the cilia which are used to clean out the lungs.
  6. German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche believed that madness is a rare thing in individuals.
  7. Keeping ship-wrecked goods is illegal in the UK.
  8. A Maori dance is used to unite British school children.
  9. Dishcloths are purged of 99% of their bacteria during two minutes in a microwave - but they can pretty easily catch fire while doing so.
  10. A haddock's mating call starts as a slow knocking sound, before turning into a quicker hum similar to a small motorcycle revving its engine.
