Feeding the Soul with Tarkan

Tarkan at the Harbiye
Celeb stories on opening August show at the Harbiye/Milliyet & Hürriyet
Celebrity portals have reported on Tarkan's opening Harbiye show last Saturday evening.

Kick-staring the series on 31 August, the Turkish online entertainment supplements of the major dailies have led with the story about the iconic singer's diehard fanbase raising a banner, reportedly some five metres long and carrying a heartfelt poetic slogan.

It has become something of a tradition for the artist's fans to hold up lengthy slogans declaring their love for their idol to read out loud during the Harbiye shows.

According to reports Tarkan was once again moved by this year's message in Turkish, which loosely translated read out as:

Of what use is the world to this soul if starved of loving you/as long as we live our essence will burn for you, worship you"

The singer, as humble as ever, told his fans to dismiss the last part about worshipping him, as he thanked them over and over again for their kind sentiments.

In other notes from the 31 August event, when Tarkan opened the show with "Firuze", late lyricst Aysel Gürel's daughter Mehtap Ar was spotted standing up and applauding from the front row during the singer's hit rendition of her mother's song.

Among those in the crowd, other famous Turkish faces seen were playboy Hacı Sabancı of the renowned Sabancı family, Turkish actress Hande Subaşı, Turkish heiress Derin Mermerci and her current boyfriend media CEO Cem Aydın, Turkish football manager Fatih Terim's wife Fulya and daughter Buse, and female journalist Ömür Gedik seated next to Samsun Demir - the head rep of Tarkan's current music label DMC.

Another female journalist, self-confessed Tarkan fanatic, Ayşe Arman was also in attendance. Arman had interviewed Tarkan in 2001, and in Dubai in 2006 and had presented him with a best male pop singer gong during an awards ceremony in 2011 run by Hürriyet.

Of the Harbiye show, the celeb reports say that the singer preferred to sing rather than talk at the start of his opening set, but after his fifth piece, he was quoted as having said,

I've just about got my excitement under control. Believe me when I say words cannot describe how beautiful it is being here together with you. I know you all want to go crazy. I'll be singing you some fast tracks next. Get ready to break loose."

The singer was as good as his word, with actress Subaşı sharing via her social account that Tarkan was the only love of her life she "couldn't give up", while Terim's daughter commented that Tarkan's "great energy owned the stage".

The first of a marathon of five, Tarkan gave another performance on Sunday, and is getting ready to take to the stage on Monday evening for a third performance.
