  1. A month of samba football at the 2104 World Cup sees Germany win with a brilliant extra-time goal from substitute Mario Götze giving his team a 1-0 win against Argentina, to end their 24-year wait for a World Cup title. In the match for third place the Netherlands beat Brazil 3-0, as the Brazilians suffered defeat after defeat towards the final run. The host team were unable to cope with the loss of Neymar, who was nearly left disabled after a challenge by Colombia defender Juan Zúñiga in the quarter-finals. (Read more)

Islamist militants ISIS are said to be similar to the French Jacobins and Lenin's Bolsheviks, the Khmer Rouge and the Red Guards, who all used terror as a way of cleansing humanity of what they regarded as moral corruption. These violent jihadists share more with this modern revolutionary tradition than any ancient form of Islamic rule and owe the way they organise themselves and their utopian goals to the modern West.
