I Watch You Walk Away

I watch you walk away,
the darkness will follow soon
but for now the summer sun on your back
loving caresses you in my place,
this is no daily walk;
the heat is raw,
cursing the footsteps
as they grow in number,
the gap widens between us:
a second before we had been lovers,
now sweating strangers
watching each other go astray,
your head bowed, feet walking forwards,
souls walking backwards
not wanting to slip so easily away,
how my heart aches foolishly
at how foolish we are,
every part of me
except the one that matters
screaming at you to stay.
