All Kinds of Loss

time doesn't fish to catch
us on a taut line; we are time:

nothing dies that has
had its place in time,

death is not the end
but a change of nature:

life simply goes out of sight,
to its true inheritor.

loss is an expansive sea,
there is no end and no beginning
to its fullness of being,

keeping it company
on the edge of its shore:
dancing on a crowded floor,

it teaches the need
to stay nimble of sand
that is sucked from under feet,

and watch waves recede
to leave surfaces polished
clean and neat, yet raw.

Whoever loves another
Must learn to love
Their shortcomings,

But whoever loses another
Must learn to lose
Their shortcomings.
