Will Turkey Wake Up With Tarkan?

By Adelind Osmanlı reporting from Munich, Germany

News report about delay rumourAfter official sources gave a press statement nearly three months ago about Tarkan's new track "Uyan" (Wake Up) - written for nature conservation society the Doğa Derneği by the artist - the song is yet to be released.

Now rumours are springing up in the Turkish press that claim the delay is due to featuring musician Orhan Gencebay's dissatisfaction with his image on the music video to the song (see top left pic).

Tarkan had invited the popular male singer to feature on the track, which has been postponed once already.

The traditional Turkish folk-song type track was planned to have been sold with the Doğa Derneği's magazine's premier issue at the end of July. This date was then moved to the start of September, but the magazine has still not been released for distribution.

It was hoped that Tarkan's music and lyrics and Gencebay's collaboration would have become the Doğa Derneği's new voice in their campaign to raise awareness about Turkey's fast disappearing nature and wildlife.

Now fans and the press alike are left wondering whether Turkey will ever "wake up" with Tarkan.
