Tarkan on NTV for Nature

By Adelind Osmanlı reporting from Munich, Germany

TarkanAs published yesterday, Turkish news station NTV has aired Tarkan's music video to his "earth-song" track "Uyan" (Wake Up), with the artist's official site posting the video up on its front page also today.

Directed by "Pare Pare" director Altan Dönmez, the music video - which includes featuring artist Orhan Gencebay and is sponsored by Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream - is aiming to reach a wider audience in a campaign to raise awareness about Turkey's fast disappearing nature and wildlife.

The start of October had seen the release of the first issue of Turkish nature conservation society the Doğa Derneği's magazine Doğa, with Tarkan's single "Uyan" as a free gift with the publication's première.

The lyrics are a re-working of an initial draft of a song Tarkan had published in an article for Atlas magazine, and in essence resembles Tarkan's socio-political song "Hop Hop" (Metamorfoz, 2007) in which he urges everyone to unite to overcome the obstacles that face them.

Setting the example of doing more for the environment in Turkey, in 2007 the artist signed up with Turkish nature conservation society the Doğa Derneği to raise awareness in his home nation about nature conservation.
