Press Snippets: More Bad News for Tarkan

By Adelind Osmanlı reporting from Munich, Germany

Screencap of reportsThe oldest current English-language daily in Turkey, the Hürriyet Daily News and Economic Review, has published an article on the possibility of Tarkan facing jail time on drug charges following Turkish news agencies breaking the story yesterday, while celebrity portal Turuncutime reports that an ex-girlfriend of Tarkan's has been attacked (see left pic).

Jail Time on Drug Charges

Reporting on Thursday's news wires, and headlined as "Turkish popstar Tarkan faces jail time on drug charges", the Hürriyet Daily News and Economic Review writes that Tarkan could face up to two years in prison for alleged drug use, according to the indictment prosecutors submitted to the court for the case in which he will be judged with 16 other suspects.

Following the news printed in Turkish sources, such as Milliyet, the English language article prints that the wording of the indictment says the singer is accused of "buying, accepting or having drugs for use", with prosecutors demanding jail term between one and two years.

The indictment also asks the court to evaluate whether Tarkan is suitable for drug rehabilitation and to be put on community service instead of being sent to prison, the Review writes.

Prosecutors have also demanded similar penalties for one other accused on the indictment, while the other 15 are accused of drug dealing and more serious offences, with prison terms between 5 and 23 years for each of them.

As Tarkan Deluxe previously reported, the Review's translation of Turkish news wires also confirms that the indictment must still be accepted by the court.

However, if accepted, the suspects will be tried in a Turkish criminal high court for serious crimes.

Tarkan's Old Flame Attacked

Meanwhile, Tarkan's old girlfriend from the Nineties, Elif Dağdeviren has been seriously attacked, Turunctime reports.

The article says that Dağdeviren - for whom Tarkan reportedly wrote "Inci Tanem" (Ölürüm Sana, 1997) - was attacked by two unknown assailants after getting lost in a side street in Istanbul.

After tending to severe injuries suffered to her right arm in hospital, the report writes that Dağdeviren is now recovering at home.

Appearing for her annual tennis tournament, Avşar reportedly said that Emir turned the disadvantage of looking like Tarkan into an advantage, by deflecting criticism of any outward similarities by saying it was an honour to be like him.
