Tastes of Turkish Travel

  • Turkish Airlines was established in 1933 and at the time flew to more countries than any other carrier in the world. Fast forward to present day and they have a fleet of over 261 aircraft flying to 243 cities around the world. The Star Alliance member airline’s motto is “Widen your world” reiterating the company’s expansive service network, it’s perhaps this diverse service offering that landed Turkish Airlines as the fifth ‘Best Airline in the World’ according to the World Airline Awards. They were also named ‘Europe’s Best Airline’ in the 2014 Skytrax Passengers Choice Awards.
  • Istanbul is at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Fifty-five percent of tourists in Istanbul come from outside Europe; the city is also becoming popular as an extended layover spot. It was the fastest growing international air hub in 2014, and according to figures compiled by market intelligence firm Euromonitor Internationalits its seventh most visited status last year reflected its central location.

This year it stepped one place up to sixth place according to the Global Destination Cities Index. It cites the location of Turkey's largest city, at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, as a big reason for its popularity as a destination. If its growth in air travel connectivity continues at current rates, the report predicts it will enter the top five destinations by 2016.
