Tarkan's "Cuppa" Struggles to "Whoop" it Up

By Steffan Matrak posted from Moscow, Russia

Tarkan's 2016 summer release brought with it a lot of domestic social shade, and the club-inspired pop plaque has struggled to find a top place in the Turkish charts since causing a stir on its drop online.

"Cuppa" has failed to hit the top slot in most official listings, after catching a major 21.72% total share of radio play in Turkey in its first few weeks.

The track has yet to make a dent in the official Turkish airplay chart, having only charted as the third highest entry in its release week.

The official airplay chart is composed exclusively of Turkish language singles in Turkey and was issued by Nielsen Music Control. It's now monitored by its business partner VY Media under the name of MusicTopTR.

MusicTopTR tweets the top three tracks every week on Friday and it is unknown whether Tarkan will make an appearance in the official chart's 31st week.

In other charts, leading music station Kral's Pop List, which compiles nationwide airplay and sales, places Tarkan in 8th place, while the iTunes sales chart for Turkey sees Tarkan's single drop from 7th to 15th place, having failed to secure a top five slot.

In comparison, Tarkan's pop counterpart Mustafa Sandal dropped his single this week to go straight to number one on the iTunes chart. Official Turkish airplay figures see it as the fastest rising new entry of the week, with pop diva Hande Yener holding the current number one slot for sales and airplay.

Translation notes: What does "Cuppa" mean?

Tarkan released "Cuppa" a day before an Islamic faction in the military attempted a coup over the elected administration in Turkey, with the pop singer telling people to switch off the TV and their smartphones and "dance the night away".

The artist went on to publish "Cuppa" on his official YouTube account on 21 July, a week after its digital release. A trend fail domestically, it has only managed two million hits in two weeks, while attracting four thousand dislikes, the highest for any of his official posts.

Keeping his signature silence over recent events, it's rumored Tarkan may scrap plans to video "Cuppa" if industry figures fail to pick up.
