Harbiye PR Coup Helps "Cuppa"?

By Steffan Matrak posted from Moscow, Russia

Suffering iconic pop star Tarkan's "Cuppa" has missed the top slots again in the official Turkish single chart's 35th week - unable to break the female stronghold over the top three positions.

Upholding a top three position elsewhere, music monitor TelifMetre's top ten most played songs for radio airplay sees Tarkan drop to and maintain third place in its published numbers between the last half of August and the first week of September.

Crunching numbers weekly, TelifMetre has been taking a few radio stations off its lists, while still monitoring them, to avoid manipulation of its Top 40 airplay chart.

Keying out manipulations has seen Tarkan lose its second place rating. Radyo Viva's play share, which had previously placed "Cuppa" top of its chart, has been dropped, although Tarkan has topped Show Radyo's playlist this week and Powerturk's chart last week.

Moving on to music station Kral and its compiled figures, Tarkan rises one place overall back to 5th place in its national lists, while maintaining 9th position in Kral's pop radio chart.

Yo-yoing "Cuppa" has yet to slay the charts, but meanwhile the singer's Harbiye September shows, as expected, are being hailed as a PR coup.

Currently enjoying the spotlight of the open air arena, with media rumours that three more dates have been reserved, the singer's profile has been given a much needed boost as the fourth most talked about celebrity in August.

Tarkan has defended his silence over the country's recent troubles from the stage, to declare he has " no hidden motives" against rumours his "Cuppa" track was a signal that disgruntled factions in the military would try to overthrow the government.

On iTunes downloads and Apple streaming "Cuppa" saw a temporary rise in the charts, although it dropped two places in total digital sales from last week.

Cautious fans are hoping this will translate into official chart success for "Cuppa" finally, months after its release.

Kickstarting a chart comeback, the artist's classical album, released last May, also saw a revival in sales.
