Tarkan's 7th Week at the Top

Posted by Steffan Matrak from Moscow, Russia and Hatice Soylu from Istanbul, Turkey

Tarkan's first digital single from 10 remains top of the official Turkish airplay chart's 31st week - marking seven weeks in a row at peak position since its release.

Independent monitor Telifmetre's charts for TV and radio are updated on Monday, while today music station Kral has placed Tarkan at top position for a second week in a row on its alternative monitor pop chart - but only after dropping the artist to second place for two weeks.

Initially unknown as to why the station had manipulated its chart against independent figures, the reason was later discovered to be an interview incentive for female artist Hande Yener to appear on the station's lead talk show.

Official Instagram posts indicate the disgraced station gave the top slot to Yener to coincide with an interview with Kral head Mehmet Akbay on 20 July, which was postponed over the sudden death of nineties pop icon Harun Kolçak.

Yener quickly dropped down Kral's chart after adjustment was made to correctly reflect monitor figures when the station was unable to keep up the manipulation for more than two weeks. This prompted a last minute refusal from Yener to attend the rescheduled interview with Akbay, using the excuse of a flash summer storm which hit Istanbul on 27 July.

In anticipation of the pending interview this time, Kral manipulated its pop station airplay which has continuously denied Tarkan the top slot to give Yener highest place. But being gifted top slots for two consecutive weeks seemingly insufficient for the singer, Yener's last minute cancellation with Kral's top man again has postponed the interview indefinitely.

Elsewhere, the real news is that Tarkan has seen his six week run at the top of digital sales and streaming come to an end with the release of a single from pop newbie and fellow DMC artist Aleyna Tilki.

Tilki is the first Turkish artist to pass the 300 million viewing mark with her break-out single on YouTube, while her second digital single entered straight in at number one on digital platforms, knocking Tarkan off the digital top spot. This second music video has reportedly broken domestic streaming records by notching over 5 million views in its first 24 hours on YouTube.

Although Tilki's success has been dogged by rumours of YouTube viewing manipulation in failing to translate her streaming prowess into huge sales as yet, her simultaneous domination of charts such as Spotify, iTunes and Turkish equivalent fizy goes some way to disprove her critics.

On these figures, Tilki's 3rd place on Kral's monitor chart and Yener dropping out this week is also evidence of the station's readjustment to correctly reflect independent figures, while Tilki's career has already courted controversy - highlighting the covert cooperation between DMC exec Samsun Demir and Kral's Akbay.

Even though Kral and DMC are owned by different parent companies, both Demir and Akbay threatened to dump Tilki in a concerted effort to stem public outcry over news the 17 year-old was performing in gay bars with a 29 year-old DJ/producer she is rumoured to be dating, after her YouTube success last year.

Meanwhile, Tarkan's music video to his first digital single has collected over a total 80 million views and his 2017 album still tops the charts for highest selling album.
