Greatest Adventure

How can you know
on your prepackaged journey
that one day you'll wake up
and the world
is changed forever?

Hindsight will provide
persuasive narrative
of portents, strange shapes
in the sky, or in your spaghetti
for dinner the night before,

but the day you shaped my world
I had no warning,

no far away
distant ripples of an earthquake,
or gales of wind-strewn earth
shaking my foundations,

no cries of seagulls
straying from sea, or
mountaintops falling
like toy bricks
echoing in the distance

to warn that it's not the journey
but the coming home
that is the greatest adventure,
in a story that
would never again
be written just by me.
