A Life in Winter

Cold dazzles, and frost
pierces hearths where
living fires lay dormant
fasting, a wasted life lost
in winter is sleeping in
the snow, or lays dying,

framed within deep
footprints that accost
and mercilessly go.

Lament survives the sting
in unfilled hearthusks,
and throws away undoing
desires at dusky heavens to
ferment on higher ground;
and come the morning,

clouds numbed by freezing
rain cry, and hope translates
the falling in a shroud sky.
