Nothing grows
in one place forever,
but depending on where
you plant its seed;

if sprinkled on to
shallow shores,
the ocean's surge
will call it away,

a few sprouting
memories thrown together
across the field of time
will not yield more than a dying day;

harvested to
momentary appetites,
it merely becomes
an ode to craving;

the place to sow
forever is in a deeper keeping,
smaller ground for larger toil,
where the earth is less stonier;

which no time can disown
or death call to its own;
nothing grows forever
so well as heartbound soil.
