A Smell for Beauty

Some say we invented love
in our ignorance to answer
any universal question, but
love thought us into being:

climbing trees to feel its bark,
rubbing its flowers in our hands
to sniff tingling palms that
catch stories of its scent,

heart bud of petals gasping,
pinky-white flowering branches,
a base of sensual skin
stroking exotic blossom,

a smell for beauty
awakening the heart
to how empty it has been,

until it fills the senses
to awake furiously
in a breath of first times,

leaving the host breathless
to rest under its shade,
a pause taken for hunger's sake,
a swinging ache that shakes
the very core of the day.
