The Number 4

Quite by chance, four years ago, in 2004, on the fourth month of the year, I started this blog - Tarkan Deluxe. It's name consists of 12 letters, which when divided by 3, equals 4, too.

So I thought I'd research the number for a bit of fun, and it seems that 4 can symbolise a universal, physical realisation of creative expression and love.

I can live with that.

What's 4 for?

The number of order in the universe is 4 - the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water; the four seasons; the four points of the compass; the four phases of the Moon (new, half-moon waxing, full, half-moon waning). The Four Noble Truths epitomize Buddhism.

In number symbolism, if 1 is the raw creative seed, 2 the earth in which that seed is planted and 3 the finished result of both, then 4 is the physical realisation of all three. It is the dream of creative expression coming true.

Other symbolic meanings of the number 4 - linked to those of the cross and the square - have made it a symbol of wholeness and universality.

Four is the only number in the English language for which the number of letters in its name is equal to the number itself. This is also true in several other languages, such as German and Turkish.

In expressing love, "4" may be used to replace the word "Love" (I4U).
