A Summering Fall

one of summer end's greatest ironies
is its open invitation
for next year,
at its most inviting
when the heat softens its glare,

swimming, shimmering, summering
into autumn, hopes are dashed
into the blood-red of
the ocean and burgundy wine,
as late summer kisses those still
unwilling to leave the poolside,

while early fall tastes sweet,
wrapped in sticky skies
of candy-floss haze,
a maze of lazing desire
about the joys of harvesting,
until the cold and snow
dusts icing on apple pies
and Yule logs ready for the fire.
