A City's Cultural Crown and Tarkan
Correspondent Susanne Fowler, writing for the New York Times, has posted about Istanbul's preparations for 2010 as a European Capital of Culture, and doesn't fail to mention Tarkan's concert on 16 January (see left pic).
In her January 10 dated piece "Istanbul Embraces Its Cultural Crown", Fowler explains that the year long celebration "truly kicks into high gear on Friday, with a citywide party designed to dazzle spectators and erase any doubts about Istanbul's place as a cultural gem worthy of international attention.
"Tarkan, a popular Turkish pop singer, is scheduled to perform in central Taksim Square ... [and while] the hipsters are boogieing, the political and business elite will gather at a V.I.P. reception along the Golden Horn, just before an eye-popping light and music show starts at (when else?) precisely 20:10," she writes.
The Europe edition of the Wall Street Journal, in reporting on the city's celebrations, had also deemed Tarkan's name newsworthy enough to mention in their recent article on the events scheduled to take place next week.
