Tarkan Cover Wins 2013 Music Award

Turkish pop's iconic singer Tarkan has won a music award from music station Kral for his cover of the Sezen Aksu track "Firuze" (Firouzeh) from the 2013 tribute album Aysel'in (Aysel's) - which also won an award for best album in a musical project category.

The track is a cover version of a song made popular by his one-time musical female mentor, Aksu. It was first released in 1982 on Aksu's 5th studio album of the same name, and is a classic amongst pop music listeners.

Aksu co-wrote the track with late female lyricist Aysel Gürel, who passed away in 2008. It was a few years after her death that Gürel's daughters began the tribute album project. Three years in the making, the compilation record had been highly anticipated following the news of Tarkan's cover track.

This is the second accolade Tarkan has been awarded for his cover version of Aksu's song by a music station. Tarkan's track was selected as best cover song at the 4th Pal FM music awards yesterday. Tarkan was one of the few artists to win in both categories, even though Pal FM's list of winners looked very different from Kral's final selection overall.

Although music station Kral is widely criticised for favouring artists signed up to the DMC label (to which Tarkan currently belongs), it hands out its annual award trophies to the best in the Turkish industry according to a collaboration of votes from a 200 member jury, a nationwide public vote, and airplay and sale figures for that year.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Kral decided not to hold a presentation evening for its Turkish music awards for the first time in its two decade history, and announced the winners simultaneously across its TV and radio stations today.

With plans to hold birthday celebrations in the summer to celebrate Kral's twenty years of honouring the best in the Turkish music industry, it is rumoured that as the ceremony's most awarded recipient with 12 gongs and counting, Tarkan might attend.

The singer holds a special place in the award ceremony's history, as he was awarded the first ever accolade handed out for best pop music artist by the music station. On taking to the stage to accept his award in 1994, he said he would try to "be worthy" of the honour bestowed on him in his thank you speech.
