Three More Dates for Harbiye?

Posted by Hatice Soylu from Istanbul, Turkey and Steffan Matrak from Moscow, Russia

Family favourite pop icon Tarkan has been making a splash in the media with his Harbiye shows.

Under the tag of #TarkanZamani (#TarkanTime) the first three shows in a series of seven dates at Istanbul's Harbiye open air arena has seen fan and famous alike flock to hear the music artist sing.

Capturing a sense of solidarity, people gathered together in defiance of a recent spate of attacks to rock Turkey and dance the night away.

Kickstarted on September 3, against rumours that Tarkan is losing money over the struggle of ticket sales, there are reports that allege the singer is earning 200,000 TL ($70,000) a day after costs for each show, with another three dates held in reserve if demand surpasses ticket sales. Ticket seller site Biletix shows the series of seven events as unsold out as yet.

Opening with Turkish classics from his classical album, the second half of his show saw a pop repetoire of past tracks, including his polarising "Cuppa" drop of the summer.

From other reports in the Turkish entertainment press, reports say that Tarkan sang a new song "Üşüdüm" which got "top marks from the crowd".

Finally, from news stories circulating there are also reports of the icon's message to the audience that there was "a need for the unifying strength" of music over recent events.
