Tarkan Throws Back to Nature

Tarkan has shared photos from his nature efforts in Izmir as part of Throwback Thursday.

The singer writes that it has been five years since he decided to support the building of a nature school in Seferihisar, a coastal district and the center town of the same district in the province of Izmir.

He also adds it has been three years since he gave the same support to Prof. Dr. İsmet Sungurbey's Home for Strays.

Using the #tbt hashtag for Throwback Thursday, he said that he wanted to take the opportunity to thank the Mayor of Seferihisar, Tunç Soyer, whom the megastar describes as the main architect of both projects.

"[Mayor Soyer] has shown what a leader with limited economic means but an expanse of vision can achieve in such a short space of time. He has won my support, and many others like me, to back his projects, and if more opportunities were available to him I'm sure he could achieve more great projects for Izmir and Turkey, by mobilising people to come together over a love of nature," Tarkan wrote.

However, the post has been criticised by certain quarters with claims that it was shared for Mayor Soyer's own "political purposes".

Turkish daily paper Yeni Asır has said it appears Soyer's friends are doing promotional work for him, describing Tarkan's post as an apparent vote for Soyer's efforts for candidacy to mayoral office in Izmir.

Yeni Asır was founded on August 26, 1895, and is a local paper for the Aegean region. Published every week, it's described as the largest local newspaper in Turkey.

The newspaper is now close to the current political party in power and is classified as nationalist-conservative.
