Tarkan's Plea for Stray Animals

Tarkan has asked people on social media to "spare a thought" for stray animals as the weather gets colder and to leave out food and water for them for Throwback Thursday.

The singer shared a #tbt winter photo of his adopted stray dogs today, writing: "Rainy and snowy days are ahead. Let’s take care of our stray animals in this cold weather" with the hashtags #strayanimals #abowlofwaterabowloffood.

Tarkan's call to care and protect stray animals received hundreds of thousands of likes, with many fans thanking the singer for his stance towards animals in need.

Stray animals in Turkey have recently become a focus of public attention amid a series of violent attacks.

A landmark government-sponsored bill put forth in April seeks a jail sentence for perpetrators who torture animals instead of a fine - a topic which has widely been discussed in Turkey, with animal rights activists calling for a change for decades.

The bill, which dissolves the lines between pets and stray animals, also proposes that animals are not property.

And in the event of being found guilty of the murder of an endangered species, an accused could find themselves sentenced to a maximum seven years in jail.
