The Drum Project
By Aslı Sağlam, reporting from Istanbul, Turkey
Have you ever wondered how the problems between the Islamic world and the West could be tackled? Aiming to unite two different worlds on the same stage, the four minds of Zeynep Dereli, Allen Collinsworth, Itır Devellioğlu and Mehmet Fevzi Çelebi have set up DRUM to do just that.
Standing for "Dialogue Respect Understanding Through Music" the multi-million dollar project has already received the support of George Clooney and Matt Damon, with plans for Turkish pop star Tarkan and Bono to share the same stage at a concert in Istanbul, scheduled for summer 2007 and to be aired worldwide on various music channels, including MTV.
Tarkan recently gave a concert in Ankara for the Fifth Annual Glocalization Conference in July this year, hosting representatives from 60 world cities, 40 representatives from international organizations including the World Bank and the United Nations.
If the event goes ahead as reported, there are also plans to release a music CD of the DRUM concert.
MTV will also launch a Turkish version of their station in Turkey, MTV Türkiye, to pursue the emerging music market. Its opening has been planned to co-incide with the Ramadan celebrations in October.
