Tarkan's Tomato Nomination

By Adelind Osmanlı reporting from Munich, Germany

Next Wednesday sees the start of Gay Pride Week in Istanbul.

Starting on the 27 June and ending on the 1 July, an exodus of nationalities from across the world will be converging at the ancient city to celebrate freedom of sexual expression during a massive show of support from Turkish and foreign celebrities.

Organised with the backing of the Dutch Embassy in Istanbul, politicians from Belgium, France and Italy will be in attendance, with activists from the "Lesbians of Athens" group also making an appearance.

The most interesting aspect to the week long events is the upcoming finale on the first day of July, which will end with an interesting award ceremony.

Headlined as the third annual GM Tomato Award ceremony, a number of Turkish celebrities from the media and music industry have been nominated in recognition for their public gaffes about the issue of homosexuality.

Tarkan is also up for the tomato award this year, for his "comments" to a Bulgarian magazine in 2006 that homosexuality could be the result of a confused childhood.

Tarkan won a booby prize for his comments from Turkish gay rights' movement KAOS GL last year, and is look set to win his second award in this category.
