Turkish Press Talk Tarkan
As Turkish music fans waited for the Live Earth Istanbul headliners to be announced at a press conference where one of the architects of the concert series, former US Vice-President Al Gore, was in attendance, Tarkan fans wonder whether Turkish pop music's international ambassador will be taking to the stage to raise awareness for a climate in crisis.
Mr. Gore arrived in Istanbul with his wife yesterday to give a presentation on climate change during a conference hosted by World Wildlife Fund, Turkey and Garanti Bank. His presentation at this conference in Turkey was based on his 30 years of work and research about the causes and effects of global climate change. His speech was given to Turkish opinion leaders, leaders of the Turkish business world and media at Çırağan Palace today.
The international artists to take part in the Istanbul leg of this summer’s anti-global-warming Live Earth concert series will equal the sum of all famous stars who have performed in Turkey to date, Purple Concerts, the organizers of the event have said.
Meanwhile the Turkish press have lost no time in speculating about the line-up. With suggestions of international artists such as INXS, Chris de Burgh and Zucchero appearing at the Yedikule Hisarı (Seven Towers Fortress), a historic Byzantine site in Istanbul that will stage the concert, talk in the press seems confident that Tarkan will be taking part. There are some even suggesting that Madonna may follow him, with the Turkish pop star announcing her via link.
Live Earth Istanbul will be broadcast on local television and as part of a global feed to as many as 120 television channels worldwide and will feature both international and local Turkish acts on July 7 2007. Additional concert details and the acts will be announced at a later date.
A New Duet
Tarkan is also making the domestic headlines due to a new duet with Sibel Can. A close friend and self-confessed fan of Tarkan, the female singer recently announced that he had composed a song specially for her latest album. Days before its release, video footage of the two stars working in the studio has been aired.
Last year they also hit the headlines together when she was among those that attended the string of Harbiye concerts on its second night, and was invited by Tarkan on to the stage where they sang and danced together.
This is not the first time Tarkan has given his compositions to fellow artists or sang a duet. He has previously sung duets with Turkish music classicist Müzeyyen Senar, folk singer Pınar Sağ and one time creative collaborator Nazan Öncel, while more recently featuring in his own songs with artists such as Kibariye and lending his backing vocals to his ex-backing singer Murat Boz.
