Riding the Clouds

Tarkan Deluxe pays homage to Baris Akarsu

One of Turkish rock music's recent stars, Barış Akarsu had released two albums and looked set for a promising career, when he met with an untimely accident in Bodrum on his birthday in 2007.

Travelling to his celebration party with two girlfriends, he was the victim of a terrible collision, that took the life of his two friends and put him into a coma.

Even with the singer attached to breathing apparatus, and doctors emphasising that his recovery would be a miracle, thousands of fans from all across Turkey and Europe travelled to Bodrum to keep vigil outside the hospital he was admitted to on that fateful day.

Barış was pronounced dead in the final hours of July 4, 2007 due to heart failure, after five days in a coma.

Out of respect for the rocker's family and fans, Tarkan Deluxe pays homage to the rising star, and will hold a few days silence to mark his struggle for life.

Running to the Clouds

Barış, Turkish for "peace", was born on the 29 June 1979 in Zonguldak, a province along the western Black Sea coast region of Turkey, to mother Hatice and father Selahattin Akarsu.

He spent most of his school years in another Black Sea town, the small port stead of Amasra, and during his teens he found a passion for sailing. His passion for music, however, began at an even earlier age, and the story goes that he used to travel the streets with a flute. His interest in music deepened as he learnt to play the keyboard, guitar and harmonica, and was an avid fan of hard rock and heavy metal music.

Playing in bars across Antalya, his road to greater fame came when he entered the Turkish version of the TV music talent contest Star Academy in 2004, and won. Moving to Istanbul, he released his first album in 2005, and released his second album Düşmeden Bulutlara Koşmak Gerek (Gotta Run to the Clouds Before I Fall) in 2006.
