We Need a Hero Like Tarkan

By Adelind Osmanlı reporting from Munich, Germany

Screencap of reportLocal news portal 08Haber for the Artvin province in Turkey, on the Black Sea coast in the northeastern corner of the country bordering with Georgia, has mentioned Tarkan in its search for "a hero" like the artist (see left pic).

The article writes that, at a local evening in the town, a female teacher said "Tarkan changed the fate" of a controversial dam planned to be built in the southeastern region of Turkey, and that Yusufeli, a district town of Artvin, needed to find a similar celebrity to champion their own cause.

There is a widely-criticised plan to dam a river that runs through Yusufeli which would submerge 15,000 homes.

Meanwhile, local Artvin correspondent Sami Özçelik picked up the story to add it to his recent column. Reminding his readers that although Tarkan had come under heavy criticism, he agreed with the possibility of finding a famous name to attach to the cause, and believed there was still time to save the river from being flooded.
