Tarkan Marks Women's Courage

Posted by Hatice Soylu from Istanbul, Turkey

Having marked International Women's Day on social media for 8 March yesterday, Turkish pop's megastar Tarkan reposted a share by his company HITT Productions to commemorate women torchbearers in Turkey.

In the repost is a photocollage of famous faces who lit the way in all fields of achievements, including science, sports and the arts for women.

Captured are women ranging from the late, great social activist and medical doctor Türkân Saylan to Sabiha Gökçen, the first Turkish (and according to Guinness World Records the world's first) female combat pilot, and adopted daughter of Turkey's founding father Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Kowtowing to noone, in the list of strong women included is poet and lyricist Aysel Gürel, archaeologist Muazzez İlmiye Çığ and professional tennis player Çağla Büyükakçay, while representing the dramatic and musical arts are classical Turkish music's doyennes Safiye Ayla and Müzeyyen Senar.

Last, but not least, the names reach to the luminaries of the stage and screen such as Yıldız Kenter and Afife Jale, best known as the first Muslim theatre actress in Turkey.

Of the names listed, Turkish pop's megastar Tarkan has close links with a few, including working with Senar and Gürel, while helping to raise awareness for Saylan.

Noted along with the faces pictured, the post captioned that the women are amongst the few "of the many who are lighting the way with their courage, determination and talent".
