Tarkan Remembers Youth Day

Posted by Hatice Soylu from Istanbul, Turkey

Tarkan has shared a post on social media today celebrating 19 May as the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. It is an annual Turkish national holiday celebrated on May 19 to commemorate Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's landing at Samsun on May 19, 1919, which is regarded as the official beginning of the Turkish War of Independence.

Atatürk was born in 1881, but his exact birth date is not known. In one of his speeches, he declared that he considered his birthday as May 19, in clear reference to the beginning of the national struggle in 1919. In 1938 the day was officialised as the Festival of Youth and Sports.

Today, Turkish pop's megastar highlighted these events by sharing photos of Atatürk and the country's sport personalities, while writing of his "wish on the day that Atatürk bequeathed to all of youth to see more sports men and women make us proud".

"I remember Atatürk with love and respect," the singer wrote.
