Celebrity Press Use Old Tactics
Tarkan Deluxe, in its efforts to monitor the Turkish press for Tarkan-related news to share with its readers, uncovered a good example of celebrity reporting at its worst in relation to the harassed Turkish pop star recently.
Using the age-old tactic of rehashing old stories to re-print gossip, the yellow press are once again trying to create a fiction of failure around the Turkish pop star that is far removed from reality.
Özlem Uçar's Lies Uncovered
Picked up by the general news portals too, Özlem Uçar's "article" for newspaper Akşam yesterday claims that due to Tarkan's award-winning Metamorfoz being a "flop", he has decided to release a four-track single with songs from Turkish pop diva Sezen Aksu to "save the situation".
Putting aside the fact that, contrary to Uçar's lies, Tarkan's 2007 album became that year's second highest selling album in just seven days of release (as certified by the Billboard charts), Tarkan Deluxe also found evidence that Uçar's article is a re-hash of an old April 2007 gossip piece from Star Gazete - a story that was published 8 months before the release of Metamorfoz.
Uçar re-used this year-old article, adding the already public news about the Aksu songs that had not made it into the final cut of his 2007 platinum album, and put them in an article to give the impression that Tarkan needs Aksu's song-writing abilities to "rescue" the pop artist due to the album's "commercial failure".
Metamorfoz was certified platinum by the Turkish Phonographic Industry in 2008, while over 49,000 legal online downloads of Tarkan's album were tracked by music portal TTNetMüzik in the first week of its opening in the same year.
