Tarkan at Photo Exhibition

By Adelind Osmanlı reporting from Munich, Germany

Ebru Ceylan's Photo ExhibitionTo celebrate the Çağdaş Eğitim Vakfı (ÇEV)/the Association for Modern Education's 15th anniversary, a photograph exhibition entitled "North Star - Those Holding a Light to Our Future" was opened to the public on 3 June at the Aya Irini (Hagia Irene), a museum located in the outer courtyard of the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul, where Tarkan gave a memorable concert in 1996.

Turkish newspaper Milliyet reported from the evening, with Tarkan - back in the city after a summit in Germany - attending and singing two songs at the opening of the gallery of stars, with celebrated musician Fahir Atakoğlu reportedly accompanying him on piano. Online news portal Haberturk had previously claimed that Atakoğlu would be performing for the occasion.

Head of ÇEV, Berrin Yoleri spoke at the event to explain the association's idea behind the exhibition.

"We believe there're a lot of young people with great potential in our country and we've seen that many of our people have successfully become home names globally. We came up with this project to bring these names together with our young talent, and so North Star was born.

"We managed to photograph 46 people for this evening. And we've prepared a really great book for future children to read, too. A lot of people gave their support to this project, especially from overseas, but we were restricted for time. For example names like [basketball star NBA's] Hidayet Türkoğlu, [President of The Coca-Cola Company] Muhtar Kent and [Turkish economist and politician] Kemal Derviş wanted to give their support, but it wasn't logistically possible," she said.

ÇEV's specially designed and bound photograph books - which also included special messages and the signatures of the photographed celebrities - were sold during the evening.
