Press Snippets: Another Brief Stop

By Adelind Osmanlı reporting from Munich, Germany

Screencap of reportsA quick look at the few snippets of news that mention Tarkan in the Turkish press, sees the recording artist mentioned on a popular Turkish TV drama series amongst other things (see left pic).

Turkish paper Sabah reports that popular action TV drama "Kurtlar Vadisi" ("Valley of the Wolves") has mentioned Turkey's megastar in a recent episode.

Known for its topical touch on current political issues, with the main characters dining with the police in custody, one of them asks whether Tarkan had stayed there.

"No, he was in narcotics," came the response.

Meanwhile, two reports from media portal Haberturk have mentioned Tarkan.

An article on the 1 May celebrations in Istanbul in Taksim adds Tarkan's Taksim concert this January as one of the big celebrations the city has seen, while its finance section HTEkonomi interviewed big event promoter Kemal Gürkaynak, who mentions Tarkan.

In a question as to how appropriate he saw it for celebrities to endorse big brands, Gürkaynak - who is bringing Rihanna to Turkey to perform - said it depended on how it was done.

"Using names like Tarkan that have become world brands themselves is a right choice to make," he is quoted as saying.

Turkish paper Hürriyet's Europe edition had claimed in February that a collaboration with Barbadian R&B recording artist and model Rihanna had been imminent.

And finally, Tarkan critic Bilal Özcan writing for paper Bugün has seen fit to drop Tarkan's name into one of his articles again when speaking of his open admiration for an artist who had appeared in the Nineties, too.

Of that period he said, "Tarkan was one of Turkish pop music's newest stars."
