Tarkan at Catholic Funeral

Posted by Kaya Turan from Rochester, UK

Turkish pop's megastar attended the funeral of his friend, monitor engineer Wayne “Heights” Gittens, at the Latin Catholic cemetery in Istanbul's Şişli district today.

Reports this morning write that Tarkan and his wife stayed throughout the Catholic funeral of Gittens, who passed away from cancer. The artist's appearance was all the more notable in comparison to his absence from musician friend Yaşar Gaga's funeral, who died recently and was buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

Also in attendance today was the engineer's daughter, Yvette Gittens, who flew in from Barbados to pay her last respects to a man who touched the life of Turkey's megastar.

After news of the engineer's death, it was reported that Tarkan introduced Gittens to the Turkish music scene when he invited him to monitor his live shows in 2006, which began a 12 year stay in the country. It was Gittens' wish to be buried in Istanbul.

It's said that during the 80s and 90s Gittens worked alongside such names as The Cure, Ray Charles and Bob Dylan.
