Tarkan Pushed Out of Berlin?

Report by Mark Mayhey reporting from London, UK

Popkomm 2008
Turkey at Popkomm 2008, but not Tarkan
Based in Germany's capital Berlin since 2004, Popkomm is an international trade show for the music and entertainment business, which also integrates a congress and festival. In it's 19th year - between the dates October 8-10 - 2008 will see Turkish music getting in on the act as Popkomm's partner country is Turkey this year.

A similar fair - and the world's largest music industry trade fair - is Midem in Cannes, France, where Tarkan had been presented with a gold disc for single sales in 1999.

But this time it looks like there'll be no German performance from Tarkan, even with Turkey as Popkomm's backer.

The news on the ground is that Tarkan and Sezen Aksu were "removed" from the listing at the last moment as the Turkish Ministry for Culture and Tourism couldn't meet the "heavy demands" of either artist.

Tarkan had already listed Berlin as a venue city for October 8 on his 2008 European Tour, which could now see that venue removed if the rumours are true that the artist will no longer be participating at Popkomm.

Whatever the reason for the removal - you would think Turkey would have worked harder to bring out its "big guns" in its soft muscle diplomacy to promote Turkish musical culture, by making sure it added Tarkan or one of its female divas like Aksu, Ajda Pekkan or even Sertab Erener.

It looks like this is more Turkey at Popkomm's loss, rather than a missed opportunity for Tarkan in Berlin.
