The news of yesterday's news reports from Turkish media agencies that popular recording artist Tarkan - released on bail last month - is to answer charges of drug possession, with a possibility of facing up to a two-year jail sentence if found guilty, has spread across European news channels.

The singer had been taken into police custody at the end of February following an anti-drug sting at the end of a six-month long narcotics operation in Istanbul, in which his ranch was raided and a small amount of drugs were reportedly seized.

Making the Headlines in Europe

Turkish recording artist Tarkan - Turkey's megastar as he has been labelled by some of the reports - has currently been making waves in Europe, but not with his music.

Starting with the best-selling newspaper in Europe, with the sixth-largest circulation worldwide, Germany's The Bild has carried the news of Tarkan's pending court case for drug possession onto the front page of its online celebrity sections, with most other German news channels carrying the report that Tarkan will be going back to court in Istanbul.

Yesterday's Turkish news agency press releases have been carried through the whole spectrum of the German media, with the news making Die Zeit - a German nationwide weekly newspaper that is highly respected for its quality journalism - and also the online version of Focus, the third largest weekly German news-magazine published in Munich and distributed throughout Germany.

Reports of Tarkan facing the Turkish courts once again has also made the online version of Munich's Süddeutsche Zeitung, the largest German daily national subscription newspaper.

In amongst the German regional news sites such as the Pforzheimer Zeitung for the state of Baden-Württemberg and other current news portals like Neckarquelle-online, Austria's national public service broadcaster ORF (Österreichischer Rundfunk, "Austrian Broadcasting") has given wide coverage to the news on its online site, following the lead of the Tiroler Tageszeitung paper from Innsbruck, from its online site at www.tt.com.

Meanwhile, as Romanian news and music sites carry the reports to their borders, Russia's media channels are overrun by the news.

Now with the Turkish public prosecution's decision to make Tarkan face charges on drug possession, some are wondering how this will affect Tarkan's future releases, the recent claims of summer concerts at the Harbiye in Istanbul, and the rumours that he was to make an appearance at Turkish music station Kral TV's 16th annual video and music awards ceremony on 17 May.
