News Snippets: Censored Beauty

Turkish pop newcomer, Edis Görgülü's new duet with Emina Jahović - the ex-wife of one-time Tarkan pop rival Mustafa Sandal - is looking like it might slay the Turkish language music charts, music correspondents say.

The music and arrangements to the track are by Darko Dimitrov, a highly acclaimed Macedonian record producer, songwriter, arranger and record executive credited for revitalising the Balkan mainstream pop music scene.

As one music correspondent uses Tarkan's current digital success with his 2017 album as an indicator that the Edis track may also find favour outside of Turkey, another columnist wonders why the music video seems so familiar.

Openly gay celebrity correspondent for Haberturk, Oben Budak has written about the music video to the Edis track looking like it was greatly inspired by Tarkan's nineties music video "Salına Salına Sinsice" (Ölürüm Sana, 1997).

Onedio: Tarkan's underrated video

Budak intimates that in the Islamisied "new Turkey" the only way two artists can get intimate on screen is with a pane of glass between them to avoid censure.

Tarkan's video was directed by singer and director Metin Arolat, while Edis' latest offering was directed by photographer and director Nihat Odabaşı.

Both men are gay and both have had on-off professional relationships with Tarkan. A rift was rumoured to have occurred in 2000 between the megastar and Odabaşı after the photographer sold photos of Tarkan taken during an intimate shoot without his permission.

The raunchy photos published in a national magazine saw a relaxed Tarkan strip and tease, revealing a thatch of pubic hair in sensuous poses.

And finally, in other celeb news wires are two mentions of Tarkan by two domestic celebs attesting to the megastar still being at the top of his game.

The female artists both say that being a true star is difficult. One comes every 25 years and is unique.

For the two women, Tarkan fits both categories in Turkey.
