News Snippets: Touching Up Tarkan

Posted by Steffan Matrak from Moscow, Russia

Following the homophobic social media reaction to Tarkan's baby news, the Turkish megastar has been blasted from the past by one of his ex-girlfriends, who resurfaced in the gossip press recently.

Online news wires have been circulating old stories about Jülyet Dilge - generally known in the press as Tarkan's first lover after finding fame - whose stormy relationship with Tarkan hit the headlines in the nineties.

The wires remind readers that Dilge had angered Tarkan after their split by telling the papers that she never wore underwear around him because "that's the way he wanted it".

Married with children, the one-time photography model now hair stylist to Hollywood stars, Dilge was with Tarkan for a year and a half, and is often remembered for her outrageous statements about the artist - often telling the press that Tarkan was great in bed.

It's also public knowledge that Tarkan's music buddy Yıldız Tilbe was inspired by Tarkan and Dilge's tumultuous relationship to pen the track "Kış Güneşi" (Winter Sun), from Tarkan's second album A-acayipsin (1994).

In Other News...

In other news leftovers about Tarkan, Turkish stars are still commenting on Tarkan's baby announcement video.

One female celebrity said she found it "strange and funny", while an actor commented on how he wouldn't be using Tarkan as a reference when he made an announcement.

Other celebrities made favourable comments to the cameras. One called it "completely normal" and "sweet", while another said she was ready for babysitting duties and that she was really happy for the famous couple. Another congratulated Tarkan, but said it wasn't really any of their business.

Elsewhere, it's said baby product manufacturers have been knocking on Tarkan's door for sponsorship deals, but the pop icon hasn't looked favourably on any offers.

Meanwhile, a news wire has said Tarkan's post on Turkey's military casualties in Syria had "moved people to tears", as another wrote that the singer's friend, actor and comedian Cem Yılmaz has remained notably silent.

Changing tack, Turkish media platform Onedio has decided to take the opportunity to remind its readers of Tarkan's underrated music video "Salına Salına Sinsice" (Ölürüm Sana, 1997). Going through a slideshow of the video's alien visuals, it's a showcase of absurdity and bravery, in an attempt to push the envelope of taste.

Twenty years old, some of the details shared include co-star Evgenia Kalkandjieva being Miss Bulgaria in 1995 and that Tarkan apparently made male armpit hair a trend for his Turkish counterparts. It was also noted that in today's increasing conservative mood, such experimental pop trash wouldn't make it on air.

Moving on to how the mighty can fall, Tarkan's old head of security Levent Ağaoğlu, and once close confidant, now protects teen Youtuber singers. Tarkan had parted ways with security guard Ağaoğlu after rumours of problems between the two men.

And finally in a visit to Turkey, while reports have popped up that Romanian singer and songwriter Inna wants to do a duet with Tarkan, performance art company Blue Man Group gave a surprise rendition of Tarkan's hit song "Şımarık" (1997) in Istanbul recently.
