Tarkan Talk in the Press

Posted by Steffan Matrak from Moscow, Russia

The highest selling paper of Northern Cyprus, Kıbrıs, has written that Turkey's megastar Tarkan will be peforming on the island at the Elexus Hotel for the new year. The article claims that Elexus is already in intensive preparations for the concert, but the luxury resort's official website has yet to confirm the show.

UPDATE: Elexus New Year show confirmed >>

If true, Tarkan will be back in Cyprus to meet fans after a two year hiatus, with a show planned for 31 December. An envoy of two lorries carrying the singer's equipment and special team will arrive on the island a day earlier to set up before the show.

Tarkan will be flown over by private jet, its reported, on New Year's Eve, and will stay a day, although it's not known as yet if he will be accompanied by his wife.

With sleek quarters in a posh all-inclusive resort including casino and dining rooms, plus pools and a private beach, the Elexus Hotel is just one of many luxury resorts that has earned the island the "Turkish Las Vegas" moniker.

"Tarkan is my Utopia"

In other news, Tarkan super fan, singer İrem Derici has spoken again about the night she met her idol backstage at the Harbiye - on a YouTube talk show this time. She speaks of how the face towel Tarkan threw her - a concert tradition in the early years - is hanging over her bed, unwashed of course.

"I will keep on saying that to sing a duet with Tarkan is a dream ... a utopia for me. I still have his face towel hanging by my bed. I haven't even washed it. You don't want it to wash anyway," she said.

Derici went on to explain how that evening came about thanks to a mutual backing singer hired by both artists. "I begged to get just two minutes backstage... to experience that aura ... and to take a photo with him before I die... I was completely 'out of it' when we took that photo," Derici explained, describing Tarkan's "shining light".

"He was just so sweet to me from the stage, but I just screamed for his face towel. He kissed it and threw it to me. I don't ever remember screaming so hard in my life. Even his towel smelled of perfume. But I got his wife's permission," she added.

Derici was at Istanbul's renowned outdoor theatre to watch her childhood idol perform in September this year, and shared her experience on Instagram, before she took ill and spent time in intensive care.

Blast From the Past... And Present

Next up, a celebrity entertainment show has aired a resurfaced TV interview with Tarkan back in 1994, as a singer in his early twenties and on the cusp of stardom.

Described as the artist's first TV interview, the celeb show pokes fun at his goofy teeth, his self-adulation and fear of marriage at the time, but the interview also shows great maturity as the singer speaks about the responsibilities of fame.

Elsewhere, Tarkan has been mentioned in two columns; columnist Barış Kocaoğlu, writing for paper Akşam and a Mihrace Yekenkülüğ interview for the Hürriyet.

Kocaoğlu praises Tarkan for sharing a video trail of actor and comedian Cem Yılmaz's upcoming new sci-fi film "Arif v 216" on social media. The singer - or rather his 2001 song "Kuzu Kuzu" - indirectly stars in a film where the Turkish protagonist and his alien friend visit 70s Turkey.

Kocaoğlu writes that the film doesn't need Tarkan's promotion, but it shows the enduring friendship between Yılmaz and Tarkan, both the best in their respective arts.

Meanwhile, in Yekenkülüğ's interview with Tarkan's current music label exec Samsun Demir, headlined as " You Can't Interfere with Artists", the man with most of Turkey's stars in his back pocket says that one of this year's most profitable albums is Tarkan's 10.

Although Demir goes on to say his favourite track from the album is "Çok Ağladım", further on in the interview Tarkan is absent from the exec's playlist. Demir also says he has achieved everything except getting a Turkish act to reach global status.

And finally, the latest gossip circulating in the news wires is about Tarkan's wife spending big on clothes after the singer reportedly hired his wife her own fashion consultant last year and opened her a joint credit account.

It's claimed Tarkan's wife has spent over 150,000 TL ($40,000) on a new winter wardrobe consisting of clothes, shoes, bags and accessories from famous brands in order "to dress more elegantly".
