News Snippets: Tarkan Politics

Posted by Steffan Matrak from Moscow, Russia

An old 2015 story has resurfaced where a Kurdish language Russian news wire claimed that music artist Tarkan confided to a source that his political sympathies lean towards a pro-minority political party in Turkey, the HDP.

The HDP (the Peoples' Democratic Party, or Democratic Party of the Peoples) is a pro-minority political party in Turkey. Generally left-wing, the party places a strong emphasis on participatory democracy, feminism, minority rights, and egalitarianism.

While the HDP claims that it represents the whole of Turkey, critics accuse it of having direct links to the separatist militant organisation Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which the Turkish government consider terrorists against the state.

Elsewhere more recently, online supplement for Turkish daily the Milliyet carries an article that applauds the protest over high ticket prices for a Rolling Stones concert, saying that the Turkish public should follow the example set over the astronomic prices for a Tarkan show, while the DTJ, an online portal about Turkey and the German-Turkish community, is giving away two tickets to Tarkan's Berlin show on 29 March.

The Milliyet has also published an article about the celebrities dominating press space, using figures provided from Turkish news ombudsman Medya Takip Merkezi (MTM) in its monthly report, with Tarkan the fourth most reported celebrity of February thanks to his baby announcement, while the story of mega renovations of Tarkan's houses in Istanbul and Cologne, in preparation for the star's newborn baby is the first story of March.

In other news hitting the wires, music buddy Yıldız Tilbe's tribute album is rumoured to have stalled because Tarkan hasn't chosen a song from Tilbe's repertoire to sing yet, while female pop artist Gökçe Türk said in a recent interview that she would like to do a duet with Tarkan.

And finally, Azra Akın, a Turkish-Dutch actress, dancer, model and beauty queen who was crowned Miss World 2002 in London, has said her "biggest dream" is to dance on stage at a Tarkan concert, while model and actress Çağla Şıkel said she would like to appear on the Turkish version of "Come Dine With Me" alongside the megastar.
