Press Snippets: Stories Continue to Run
As Tarkan fans wait for an official response to the recent news published by Turkish news wires that the artist has been named on a drug indictment which could see him face a possible jail sentence, media across Europe continues to run with the news (see left pic).
Regional German papers the Nürnberger Nachrichten ("Nürnberger News") and the Hamburger Abendblatt ("Hamburg Evening Newspaper") have given space to the news, while the Südwest Presse ("Southwest Press") has added Tarkan in an article of "people in the view" for today, listing him up with film director Roman Polanski, supermodel Naomi Campbell and Queen Elizabeth II as famous people recently hitting the headlines.
Elsewhere, German people and lifestyle magazine Gala has run the news on its site, while celebrity portals Star Nachrichten and Erdbeerlounge have posted it in its music section, with Hungarian paper Népszava also choosing to run it in its online section as well.
Last month, Tarkan had been taken into custody by police for questioning after a six month anti-drug operation, and had been released on bail after his name was reportedly found on the lists of arrested drug dealers.
"Don't the Police Have Better Things to Do?"
Meanwhile in the Turkish press, an entertainment correspondent has recently criticised the police in Istanbul for the recent spate of celebrity arrests making the news, while two previous news reports have been picked up by various other news sources (see left pic).
Entertainment correspondent and founder of celebrity portal Gecce, Kenan Erçetingöz has lambasted the police after the news that police were planning to question more celebrities - this time in connection with a prostitution ring.
With Tarkan's friend, singer Kenan Doğulu among those listed to be on the books as clients of prostitutes, Erçetingöz asks why people aren't left to make love as they wish, and wonders if it wasn't for celebrities, who the police would have to arrest.
"Don't the police have anything better to do than arrest Tarkan, don't they have the drug traffickers? Why is it problems like drugs and prostitution never go away?
"It's because the police like to arrest big name celebrities once in a while to make it look like they're doing their job, when the real criminals are still out there in the streets poisoning the young.
"I wonder who is next, on what charge?" Erçetingöz asks.
And finally, Posta has run Milliyet's Cadde report about Tarkan's ex-girlfriend Bilge Öztürk refusing to answer a question on whether she would defend Tarkan, while Gecce has posted the previously published story about actress and TV talk show host Hülya Avşar praising Tarkan's pop protégé Emir for overcoming the "handicap" of looking like Tarkan.
