Tarkan is This Summer's Hit

By Adelind Osmanlı reporting from Munich, Germany

Turkish news channel NTV's weekly art and culture slot "Gece Gündüz" (Night & Day) aired a report on 21 May asking important names from the music sector to predict this summer's hit song in Turkey - with the report calling Tarkan's "Sevdanın Son Vuruşu" ("Love's Last Strike") the best song to be released in Turkey in recent years.

Presented by Yekta Kopan, the programme sees Tarkan come up the winner against other pop names such as Ajda Pekkan, Hande Yener, Demet Akalın and Serdar Ortaç who will all have new releases out this summer with an eye on the charts.

Out of the five music critics asked, only one - Mehmet Tez - said that he believed Ortaç had produced this summer's hit song.

NTV's "Gece Gündüz" findings are a stark contrast to its 2007 December report after Tarkan had released Metamorfoz, where critics had panned Tarkan and labelled that record as his "most average" album to date.

However, even though Metamorfoz was poorly received by critics and the Turkish media, it had gone on to go platinum after seven days of release in 2007, and made Tarkan the best selling artist of 2008.

Music Critics Say Tarkan has Best Song

In the 2010 NTV report, music critic Naim Dilmener, musician and critic Melis Danişmend and Turkish editor of Billboard magazine Meltem Fıratlı all repeated - similar to Milliyet's variety section Cadde's recent report - that Tarkan would be this summer's most talked about name, while Kral TV and radio controller Mehmet "Gezegen" Akbay added that he believed the summer belonged to Tarkan, too.

Although it isn't noted in the 2010 NTV report that Tarkan's song "Sevdanın Son Vuruşu" is reportedly only a teaser from his new album - with indications of better songs to come - four out of the five critics filmed say that this song is better than any other pop artist's best contribution to the melody of summer hits set to hit the Turkish charts this year.

With Tarkan's song already sitting high in Kral's own airplay charts and the Turkish Nielsen ratings - without the artist having released an album or a video single as yet - it seems that all the critics who had once slated Tarkan now have high hopes for the Turkish megastar's latest album.

"This Summer's Hit is Tarkan"

The four big names in the music industry united on NTV's programme in voting for Tarkan have proclaimed this summer to belong to the Turkish megastar.

Naim Dilmener: "Tarkan will be the artist [to make his mark on this summer with] "Sevdanın Son Vuruşu". As the Metamorfoz album didn't meet Tarkan's expectations he worked hard on his new song, and it looks like he produced a really good, really pop song."

Melis Danişmend: "I believe that this summer Tarkan's "Sevdanın Son Vuruşu" titled track will be this summer's hit. I think he's now found the right way to align himself and his songs to 2010."

Meltem Fıratlı: "In my opinion the song of this summer will be Tarkan's "Sevdanın Son Vuruşu". It's an ideal song for Tarkan. You can comfortably feel Aysel Gürel's magic in the lyrics."

"Gezegen" Mehmet: "Tarkan has made an unbelievable comeback with "Sevdanın Son Vuruşu". The reason is because the song has a soul, it has a story [that it comes] from the notes of dearly departed Aysel Gürel. The music is up-beat and emotional at the same time to me, I feel Tarkan will stamp his mark on this summer."

Tarkan's 2010 Album "Coming Soon"

Music label DMC who will be distributing Tarkan's latest album has started promoting it on it's official websiteMeanwhile, as the Turkish public wait in anticipation for what is sure to be this summer's definitive hit, Turkish music label DMC, the ticket which will distribute Tarkan's latest album, has started promoting the Turkish megastar's comeback on it's official website.

It looks like the countdown to Tarkan's 2010 album has officially begun, confirming the tweets of DMC rep Samsun Demir who gave a release date given for some time in the first ten days of June.
